Can I use a home security system with existing equipment in Scottsdale?

As you research the different security companies you can use, you could have questions about if you'll have to get all new alarms and sensors or if you can use your home security system with existing equipment in Scottsdale.

Using previously installed alarms and cameras depends on the situation. You will often be able to keep your old components and switch them to a Vivint system, but only if they use Z-wave sensors and are able to sync with the new system. Here are three scenarios where you might be able to keep your old device and add it to the new system.

Your new home has a pre-installed home security system

Many times after you close on a house, you’ll notice that the old owners left a smart home system. All the devices work, are placed in the right spaces, and are ready to go. In this case, all you may have to do is to call and start a new contract. A Vivint expert will still come out to make sure there are no usability problems, and they might offer options on an upgrade or two. It's a preliminary visit, and you can have your 24/7 monitoring set up without worrying about any new devices -- unless you get some new devices.

The outgoing homeowners can move an existing Vivint contract to you for a nominal transfer fee to make the process easier. If the outgoing residents are moving to a condo or smaller home, you keeping the Vivint service may be a condition of the sale.

You need to move and bring your existing devices with you

You may need to bring along your existing Vivint system with you to your new house when you move. That’s fairly simple to do, as many components are portable. You can remove each component by yourself or contact a professional expert to take down the system. Then a pro will hang the same devices -- and any new things you need -- in the new house. The home security contract will stay the same.

You own a starter device and need to add on

Your exterior camera, smart thermostat, or small door sensor helped you see the value of a home security system, and now you want to expand. Don't fret too much about tossing away that favorite component because it could fit into your new smart home. Security companies like Vivint have crafted their systems meticulously and welcome many modern devices.

You might lose the video clips you collected, as they might not move over into a different mobile app. But your smart item will still handle like it did when it was a stand-alone device. You might even find some new activities that you can use now that it's part of a larger security system.
